Year 1 – Creating food producers - FOOD GARDENS
Year 2 – Creating large garden food producers - LARGE GARDENS
Year 3 – Creating successful commercial small farmers - SMALL FARMERS
In Year One, the Gauteng Community Food Producers (GFP) Project aims to empower 5,000 Gauteng households (25,000 people) to become sustainable food producers.
In Year Two, the top performers are further empowered to become Large Garden Producers.
In Year Three, the top Large Garden Producers are empowered to become successful commercial Small Farmers.
1. The total project covers 5,000 households.
2. A Project Unit covers 1,000 households. Therefore there is a total of 5 Project Units.
3. A Project Unit consists of 40 communities of 25 households/community.
The GFP Program operates in blocks of 1,000 households, representing an average of 5,000 people.
Every 1,000-household block is subdivided into 40 communities of 25 households.
Gauteng Food Producers (GFPs) are supplied with 4 all-included Summer Packs and 4 all-included Winter Packs.
The harvest cycle is 6 weeks, enabling the GFP to reap 4 harvests over a 24-week summer period and 4 harvests over a 24-week winter period.
4 Summer and 4 Winter packs are planted as follows:
i. 1st Summer – mid-Jan
ii. 2nd Summer – end Feb
iii. 1st & 2nd Winter – end Mar
iv. 3rd & 4th Winter – end Apr
v. 3rd Summer – end Sep
vi. 4th Summer – mid-Nov
i. Plant 3rd winter pack on the same premises as the 1st summer pack
ii. Plant 4th winter pack on the same premises as the 2nd summer pack
iii. Plant 3rd Summer pack on the same premises as the 1st winter pack
iv. Plant 4th winter pack on the same premises as the 2nd winter pack
1. Training: done by Agri Skills Transfer
a. Trainees receive certificates for high-intensity crop production.
b. 25 people per community trained at a time.
c. 2 sessions a day – morning and evening
d. 20 days, so a total of 40 sessions
e. Staff training: 40 people (one person per community) trained.
f. Train the Trainers course
Communities living in urban settlements have limited access to land. The GFP program caters for plots as small as 15 square metres (161 square feet).
1. 100 best-performing households of HGSP project to run over a one year (two seasons term), taking part in the 250 m2 Large garden Starter Pack program.
2. Distance between communities may affect logistics and transport costs/frequency of site visits.
3. Summer and winter seasonal plantings, but have sessions with groups to determine individual strengths and passion as well as off-taker opportunities to select the types of crops (offering selected options/not all)
4. Purpose is continuity and the creation of confidence to go for top yields and quality.
5. Constant practical training throughout by 10 facilitators per 10 x 250m2 plantings
