Approximately 55.5% (30.3 million people) of South Africa's population is living in poverty at the national upper poverty line ($50) while a total of 13.8 million people (25%) are experiencing food poverty.
South Africa currently has the highest unemployment rate in the world.
According to the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS) for the first quarter of 2022, the unemployment rate was 63,9% for those aged 15-24 and 42,1% for those aged 25-34, while the current official national rate stands at 34,5%.
Young people constitute 39% of the total population in Gauteng, with 2,3 million of these young people classified as not in education, employment and training.
Gauteng is home to the cities of Pretoria and Johannesburg. These cities are surrounded by towns, townships and informal settlements. Some areas like Soweto, Mamelodi and Tembisa have populations of millions of people who mostly live in abject poverty, frequent hunger and inhuman conditions.
Although Gauteng is the smallest province in South Africa (1.8% of total land area), up to one-third of the nation's total population of 60 million people reside here.
Millions of people from across South Africa and Africa have come to Gauteng (SeSotho for 'Place of Gold') in search of a better life. This has resulted in a melting pot of misery and suffering - according to the latest global crime index, Gauteng's two major cities, Pretoria (2nd place) and Johannesburg (4th place) are among the top 10 cities with the highest crime index in the world.
Food security: 35% of Gauteng's population is food insecure.
Poverty: 29% of the province's population live in poverty. 33% of its children are multidimensionally poor.
